There’s no denying it, Lennertz has brought his triple A game…this score is literally bursting with color and excitement…It’s filled with these lovely themes…[that go] deep into space and beyond. I highly recommend it.

This is first-rate big, orchestral space fantasy music, the kind we don’t really get any more.

The…tracks have a very frontier style sound to them and when you listen you do feel like you are genuinely being transported on a grand adventure…Overall, this is the best soundtrack I’ve had the pleasure of listening to in a while.

Lennertz is really in his element here, using the orchestra to its fullest potential, writing action music full of danger, intensity, movement, and brute force power…There is some dense, fiendishly complicated writing going on…and it’s enormously satisfying when you realize…how clever it is.

Tracks such as ‘Get Those Smurfs!’ or ‘Freezeball Chase’ are like running down a mountain, filled with drums and horns which cascade into one other and throw you into the fraught animated scenario. Lennertz also manages to craft a sense of theme for the main characters too, ‘Gargamel’s Lair’ nicely conveying the ominous evil of the main villain.

The songs add charm to the rawness of the film and our pick is “You Will Always Find Me in Your Heart” by Christopher Lennertz.

I can’t help but be impressed at the sheer bravado and orchestral panache Lennertz shows in these cues. Majestic orchestral writing of this magnitude gets fairly short shrift these days, and it needs to be lauded whenever it appears.

Lennertz subtly wrenches the soul in ‘Maggie Dies’ and gives us a hopeful lament as a comforting friend in our own difficult times…
